Preparing for the Skippers

This Friday, the Independence Blue Devils are taking on the Fairport Harding Skippers in a four quarter battle. The Skippers are 2-2, but undefeated at home.

"It's like preparing against ourselves." Coach Adams said about the matchup tomorrow. The problem? Fairport plays with two defensive schemes.

"From their defensive standpoint, we have to prepare against a 4-4 and a 3-3... We have to prepare for both defenses."

The Blue Devils play a 3-3, or stack defense, which only lines up three down linemen and three linebackers with a handful of defensive backs, but allows the defense to blitz from different angles. Our defense will have to get ready to defend the long ball, because Fairport runs a throwing offense, similar to Independence's Shotgun formation.

But preparing to play yourself isn't always easy. Teams often mix up formations, or align in a different way to confuse the offense and defense of the opposing team.

"What you see on film during the week isn't what you see on the field."
